Florida Governor Ron Desantis attacked media in 'Top Gun' campaign advertisement

On Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis released a political ad criticising the news media and using the Top Gun film series as inspiration.

The advertisement is DeSantis' most recent prank to advance far-right talking points ahead of Tuesday's state primary and a potential future bid for the White House in 2024.

DeSantis talks about "taking on the corporate media" in an airfield while wearing a bomber jacket comparable to what Top Gun star Tom Cruise wore in the franchise's two films.

The video features DeSantis saying, "The rules of engagement are as follows: number one - don't shoot unless fired upon, but when they fire, you fire back with overwhelming force."

DeSantis also wears a helmet bearing the "Top Gov" emblem.

The advertisement is cut with footage of DeSantis making the charge against journalists during earlier press conferences and other occasions.

DeSantis has mostly focused his efforts on Florida's educational system, endorsing Republicans for positions on regional school boards and passing legislation that censors textbook content.
